New York University’s George Amberg Memorial Film Study Center

Within the Cinema Studies department at NYU is the George Amberg Memorial Film Study Center. The facility hosts 38,000 titles on video and over 3,000 16mm film prints, including the William K. Everson Collection, available to students and faculty in the department.

In 2009, artist Cristina Casabó contacted Bill Brand, a professor in the Cinema Studies department, with home movies from her family collection, filmed from 1926 to 1931 at their home in Uruguay. Then, in 2010, Brand and a group of MIAP students preserved these films as a project in the Films Preservation course. For WDAVH, the Study Center will be presenting this material, offering us a very personal view into the artist’s history and illustrating the preservation efforts of the MIAP program.
